The Mission
Autimelody aims to facilitate communication through music with people with strong intellectual disabilities and verbal communication impairments
Problem
Individuals with strong mental disabilities often struggle to understand or use spoken language, making everyday communication with caregivers, family members, and peers challenging. This can result in frustration, isolation, and difficulties performing daily routines or expressing needs effectively. From the carer's side, on a busy day with several patients, it can be hard to allocate sufficient time to understanding a patient’s needs and dealing with high intensity situations. When verbal language does not suffice there are limited alternatives for fostering non-violent communication.
The Solution
Autimelody is an app that uses music as an intervention and communication tool. ‘Audigrams’ are melodies attributed to an action or activity which can be played in combination with a verbal command for improved understanding. As music is processed by the brain differently it tends to demonstrate more openness towards target patients.
