The Mission
The overall goal of this project is to reduce carbon emissions related to food waste, by reducing the quantity of the latter, and to enhance and support the consumption of organic and locally produced foods which are also healthier for customers in addition to being ecologically beneficial and impactful.
Problem
Food waste represents 1.3 billion tons per year, equivalent to 30% of produced food being thrown away even if it is still suitable for consumption. In addition, up to 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, so reducing food waste is one of the main challenges to reaching the SDGs and reducing global carbon emissions.
The Solution
Platforms dedicated to gathering and redistributing food that would go to waste are an efficient way to reallocate across households and catering organizations to be waste food. More and more exist, but they are not adapted to specific social and environmental contexts. In addition, they often work with multi-national food organizations that are themselves important players in global warming, which goes against the initial intention of reducing food waste for an environmental impact. The solution here is to develop an app that focuses on working with local and organic food producers to redistribute the part of their production that might go to waste.
