The Mission

To make the news more enjoyable to youth and accessible in different languages.

Problem

Reading the news is crucial to stay updated on local, national, and global events surrounding us, and across the world. It enables us to make informed decisions about social, economic, and political issues. These decisions range from participating in a peaceful protest against climate change or voting for a presidential candidate that embodies one's beliefs. Lastly, following the news helps develop fresh viewpoints, empathy, and critical thinking. Unfortunately, nowadays keeping up-to-date with the news is a difficult habit to both cultivate and maintain. Newspapers are losing their popularity and web pages often struggle to actively attract the attention of young people. The select few that do mostly target English speakers, limiting their accessibility and appeal. This can be problematic because their source of information may become biased or even illicit when solely gathered from a tailored social media algorithm, or surrounding people.

The Solution

Create a daily quiz extension for national news sites, designed to attract broader audiences. Starting with a word-guessing game, encouraging users to visit news pages, exposing them to the day’s headlines and sparking curiosity to explore articles. While other word-guessers exist, ours hopes to be accessible across countries and languages, with the same implementation, consistent themes and aesthetics. Eventually, we’ll also introduce a daily crossword inspired by recent events, primary to secondary education, internet trivia, and social media trends, to target younger people. Our overall goal is to raise the inclusivity of the news site minigames.
